Happy 4th of July!

Hope you all are enjoying your day with family and friends. I never get tired of BBQs and fireworks, which is how we are celebrating today.

God Bless America!

Tomie dePaola Contest Entry

This is the illustration I submitted for the 2012 Tomie dePaola Contest. The guidelines were to illustrate an excerpt from Chicken Licken, by P.C. Asbjornsen. Chicken Licken and the other animals meet Turkey Lurkey as they travel to tell the king that the sky is falling.

The winner will receive a trip to the 2012 SCBW Winter Conference in New York. Wish me luck!

The Reluctant Elf

The Reluctant Elf is about a girl who discovers the joy of giving. It was published in The Los Angeles Times, Kids’ Reading Room on Christmas day.  It was so much fun to do! I plan to do more watercolor in 2012.

Happy New Year!

Happy Halloween!

It’s just around the corner–candy corn, jack-o-lanterns, and apple cider! Be safe and have fun!

Thumbelina

This toad didn’t make it in the story, but I like her anyways.

Thumbelina

I started a blog with my critique group, The Painted Page. We are each illustrating a story by Hans Christian Andersen. I’m illustrating Thumbelina. I’ll still be posting here, but now you have another place to visit too. Enjoy!

Within the flower, upon the green velvet stamens, sat a very delicate and graceful little maiden. She was scarcely half as long as a thumb, and they gave her the name of “Thumbelina,” or Tiny, because she was so small.

During the day she amused herself on a table, where the woman had placed a plateful of water. Round this plate were wreaths of flowers with their stems in the water, and upon it floated a large tulip-leaf, which served Tiny for a boat. Here the little maiden sat and rowed herself from side to side, with two oars made of white horsehair. It really was a very pretty sight. Tiny could, also, sing so softly and sweetly that nothing like her singing had ever before been heard.

A scary time was had by all!

We get a lot of kids trick-or-treating in strollers in our neighborhood. Some have no idea what’s going on, others are sleeping, others are running alongside older brothers and sisters just trying to keep up. Some are scared, poor things; they haven’t learned yet about make-believe and how fun it is to dress up!
